Sumaira of RYK

Sumaira, born in Basti Fateh Muhammad in the district of Rahim Yar Khan, was born into a large, impoverished family.  Her father earned a meager living as a newspaper salesman, which wasn’t enough to support his family of 13.  This young family struggled to survive.

Being the only child in the family that was interested in education, Sumaira was able to study till tenth grade (metric).  In addition to her school studies, she also learned to translate the holy Quran, as well as taking computer training courses to further her education.  Shortly after matriculation examinations, she was married to Abdul Salam.  Unfortunately, much like her father, Abdul was living hand to mouth, and was financially unstable.

Though Sumaira wanted to help her family, she didn’t get many opportunities to do so.  Then, in 2006, HDF opened a Child Friendly School (CFS) in her village.  The DO members, impressed with  of Basti Fateh Muhammad recommended Sumaira for the position of teacher within the newly opened school.  She was quickly appointed as teacher at the school, became more financially solvent, and was better able to support the needs of her family.

Being passionate about education, Sumaira took it upon herself to begin teaching the holy Quran to her illiterate family members, as well as area villagers.  Satisfied that she is about to shoulder much of the financial burden for her family, she began a family of her own and is very eager to educate her son as she has taught countless others.  Passing along the gift of education and opportunity that she received from HDF, Sumaira is an inspiration to us all to keep giving back for you receive the rewards ten-fold.
